seven volumes in, it's not too bad now. it's almost like an opposite of angel densetsu: brilliant idea gets stale after a number of volumes. mundane idea picks up the pace and starts getting cool. and the art keeps improving.

ugh

beserk was better than this shit. sigh.

wtf it's really sapphire

i've been seeing this anime called claymore drifting around for some time now... i never picked it up because people generally called it 'beserk with girls' and i haven't even been able to read past vol 3 of beserk. for one reason or another i decided to try reading claymore, and after fruitlessly trying to find a fast direct download site, i tried going to the scanslators directly. manga-sketchbook has been around since before i started downloading manga, and it's been a source of amazing shit like eden and genshiken and angel densetsu.
...wait a minute.. angel densetsu... claymore's art looks a lot like... HOLY SHIT
from comedy gag manga to dark fantasy... and it was good enough to become an anime. kk don't dissappoint me now

urg
this weekend will be totally messed up. let's see, in three hours i have to leave the house to get back to camp for my 24 hour guard duty shift. then i get out on sunday morning, and then i meet the guys at 4pm for hairspray.

i cannot wrap my mind around the fact that this sequence of events will take up my entire weekend. some sort of timeframe/event desynchronisation going on. or something.

oh, wait, you thought i meant yesterday's dinner?

7.00pm
so did i. but life and world of warcraft don't always work that way.

so anyway. it was raining. we had nothing to do but wait so everyone spontaneously concussed. eventually our course commander popped up and told us the following news:
  • today's (wednesday's) training would end early, we'd get to eat dinner in camp. (and we were thinking, wtf? we're already going to start late cuz of the rain)
  • thursday's training was originally supposed to be a one-night field camp where we'd have to sleep out, so we could start earlier on friday and finish training faster, to come back and do all the annoying stuff like cleaning vehicles and weapons. we already knew about the outfield stayout, and of course we weren't thrilled, but we were absolutely dumbfounded when he told us
  • that the field camp was cancelled, we'd be coming back early on thursday too to get a head start on the maintenance shit, and friday would be spent entirely in camp. but don't be too happy first because
  • i have something important to tell you during lunch.
uh oh. the rain stopped, we moved out, and continued doing drills. ah, i will say again: i love being an armour commander. i was first again, as usual. i will now carry out the longest drill that we have to learn, long range multiple target contact.
driver stop driver reverse sc guide commander smoke out hello 11 this is 11B contact wait out. section prepare to take up observation positiong gunner antenna down driver move forward slowly driver stop driver reverse sc guide. hello 11 this is 11B i am now at JANE contacted enemy 1x APC and section minus troops entrenched at objective EVELYN i will be engaging over. section straight ahead 800 enemy 1x APC and section minus troops entrenched i will engage APC mg gunner will engage troops. section prepare to take up firing position the rest for local protection dismout driver ramp down driver ramp up driver move forward slowly gunner watch your front driver stop FIRE. driver reverse gunner guide driver stop ramp down section mount driver ramp up. hello 11 this is 11B reference last enemy APC destroyed, section minus troops entrenched softened i will be proceeding with right flanking mounted assualt. section straight ahead enemy troops softened prepare for right flanking mounted assualt. driver proceed. driver speed up section straight ahead FIRE section prepare to dismount and clear forward

er ok i think i'll stop. this is taking way too long to type out and i feel stupid now. i'm only about 80% through the drill.

anyway, practice cut, lunchtime. we were already speculating about what the bad news was going to be, and the most we could come up with was that we were going to get confined on satureday. bad news for me because our last saturday was burnt for live firing and i have guard duty next week. if this week gets burnt too... ugh.

but it wasn't that. here it comes, the big slammer.

"due to new opportunities opening up, we're pushing forward and cutting short a lot of the training. because we now have the chance to use better facilities in taiwan, and we're taking up the offer. as a result, your ROC will be pushed forward. you'll be flying off as early as the end of this month."
(wtf that's like two weeks awa-)
some guy: "wah, that means ROC extended?"
(and everyone is like, what you talking nub it's only pushed forward not-)
course com: "ah yes very good. yes, the ROC end date will not be pushed forward. so you will spend a total of 33 days overseas."
(WTF!)

before i continue let me take some time to say that Ǿρε®λτǐΘΠ §┼ǺЯ╚ϊĢĦ╬ is classified top secret and i'm not supposed to communicate about it to my friends and relatives, so when i say stuff like "ROC" i am referring to a mythical giant bird and in now way involves me going overseas to train in the tai of wan. srsly. oh, and i definitely won't be going to live in the camp where a highly publisised aircraft accident took place. not at all.

so there's the shocker. this is my second last weekend in singapore. by next monday we're supposed to be all packed and ready for inspection. after hearing the news, we bugged our instructors for more info about ROC (and by 'we' i of course mean, other people spoke and i listened in. you know me.) and as far as i can conclude the most pressing issue seems to be lack of power outlets in the bunk. my ipod and DS will not last. i need to bring books. a lot of books. a huge stinking pile of thick paperback books. or i will go mad.

this entry took me forty minutes to type. i could have started a shadowlabs run and ground out the final 1.5k rep i need to get this bad baby. but no, now i'll be stuck in camp for a week when i'm a single instance run's worth away from phat(not really) loot.

and the new lucky star and gurren lagann eps aren't out! fuckity fuck.

oh no don't tell me

6.33pm
"so there's good news and bad news. which one do you want to hear first?"

doesn't your heart drop when you hear something like that from your commanders? such a statement is always the preface to information that's always a case of "good news, oh that's mildly nice" and "bad news, FUCK THE SAF".

let's start from the beginning, like all storytime blog entries should.

after the live firing mentioned in the post below, we drew our arms out again to clean them. we took the better part of a whole day, and it didn't go so well. first time i've seen a commander shout, red in the face, spit flying, "KNNBCCB" to a trainee's face. it wasn't me. it was the guy next to me. fun. so we finally finished cleaning the weapons, BUT we all also were aware of the fact that section training was the very next day and we were going to be drawing them out again. sigh.

and so, section training finally started. people are going to become third sergeants in a week or less, and now we're having our first proper outfield training. lol. let me step out and say that after the last week, i am glad that i have entered armour infantry, as a sergeant-to-be.
i say this because sergeants have two of possible positions in armour infantry, ULTRA. oh, a small sidenote: the NDP had a nice parade of saf vehicles, of which the ultra m113 did not appear once at all. i am training on an outdated machine. but that's okay! because...¹
anyway, two possible positions, vehicle commander, or section commander. the vehicle commander sits in the vehicle and shoots stuff and gives verbal orders. like, SECTION DISMOUNT! upon which the section commander of the vehicle grumbles, wakes up the troopers sleeping in the back, and gets ready to go down and chiong sua. which the VC kicks back and gives support fire. and picks them up, muddy and tired, afterwards.

¹our old outdated vehicles are all going to the infantry, and thus most of us are likely to get posted to MSU! mobile support unit, where all of us will probably become VCs. what's a VC? wow, you must have skipped to the footnote before reading the text in between. coordinating this shit is hard, and possibly pointless. anyway, go back.

so we went out and did all the drills that we'd already practiced over and over on paper and in the vehicle shed and in the airconditioned bliss of the simulation centre. it went pretty smoothly, duh. on the nominal roll i'm designated vehicle commander, even though we all have to rotate positions, but it means i usually do the drills first. i'm a jc student, after all, so when it comes to tests i sit up and put in a little bit more effort to learn stuff. it was a breeze.

the next day we set out again, aiming for a 0730 time to leave the camp. for some reason we only left at 0930, though we finished prep at 0800, feeling good with ourselves for only missing the deadline by half an hour.

that fucking reason was the rain. and while we were waiting, the good news + bad news was sprung on us. oh boy, this entry is longer that i thought it would be. and i was planning on making it fucking long.

more after dinner

8.39pm
whoozy

had live firing yesterday. we woke up at 4am to prep our vehicles and draw the heavy weapons. and... about half the weapons broke while firing so it ended around 1am. then by the time we got back to camp, kept stores, oiled the weapons and sent them in, it was about 3.30am. half an hour to wash up, and lights out at 4am.

twenty fucking four hours awake! i gotta do this more often.

the next/same day (today) the commanders just gave us a bookout timing of 7am and let us roam free. booking out OTOT is fun. three hours to get a nights sleep, eat breakfast, and get ready to book out... not so fun.

got paprika from a platoonmate. didn't realise who it was by till i saw tokyo godfathers and perfect blue in the same dvd.. oh shit kon satoshi MIND FUCK MIND FUCK IT'S AWWWRIGHT

....what?

oh hey

7.01pm
so, i blinked, and the I Am A Japanese Schoolteacher editorials are suddenly good again. awhile back, the site closed shop and moved to another site.. with google ads and whatnot. and all the entries were being repeated, right from day one. one entry per week. so i sighed and bade the site goodbye, having sold itself out.

but finally, new entries are starting to appear again... joy to the world.

also, i went back to hongfire for the first time in ages. took me four tries to find out which login+password combo i'd used in the past. i can't remember why i stopped going to hongfire.. it was so long ago. i think i might have to start going back, because it has returned to being a bountiful resource that must be plumbed.

it's saturday night. where are my fucking subs for lucky star. FASTER, DOGS

1.53am
anime watching is... not exactly up to full speed, but it's entirely possible that i might be on a roll again. i brought my laptop into camp again this week. i've tested the water and now i'm playing with fire, let's hope my luck keeps holding out. anyway, despite fears that relaxation time in armour was going to end, it seems that we still have a week or so before section training really starts. last week was a four day week, this week we booked out on wednesday to attend ATI's second anniversary celebration thinggumy, on thursday. it ended after lunch so i went out with my bunkmates to lan. only.... they met up with other people and started a 5v5. so i played wow. lol. sad. it was fun, though, to have people standing behind me watching me pwn up black morass on my shadow priest. at least, i'll assume that's what they were doing... and not staring at my bald spots or anything. the fuckers. oh, minor news about my priest: it has transferred to another server (zomg us$25 thx blizz) to join my platoon mate's guild. this has ruined the wonderful symbiosis that was going on between my rogue and priest, but what the hey. life on the new server sucks, though. it's fucking quiet compared to GTFO BLACKROCK IS FULL and near impossible to find a group. as a priest. wtf is going on.

anyway. booked in thursday night, SOC test, TEST, the next morning. this morning, i should say. i've finally knocked my timing back down to below 9.30, even on armour's route. i wanna go back to the sispec route and try it out now. in any case, no more SOC for the next half a year. outstanding.

ah right, i wanted to blog about the anime i watched on my laptop too. it's hard to be organised when there's so much to say. ahh...
anyway. finished up byousoku 5cm. i went to sleep depressed and dazed and unsure if i should be touched or downright miserable. grumble grumble. watched lucky star 16, which had the most haruhi references to date. no, i think it's safe to say that they aren't 'references' any more. it's a clash of realities. or something. hirano aya is a freaking freaking talented voice actor. i completed the kare kano manga. got way too emo near the end. but seeing the main characters grown up is a A++ ending by my book.

today i downloaded Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. it was simply weird. schizophrenic. not even funny, as if it weren't trying. i think i may just keep on watching. manabi straight seems like ichigo mashimaro v2.0. to top it off, i've finally gotten hold on the complete kamichu, so moe overload is probably imminent.

i downloaded that witch touching game. it's nothing like it was cracked up to be. oh well.
