it's hilarious, seriously. the last time i was cracking up so bad was when i first found dmc.

plastic dinosaurs on a string - adequate zombie defense?
anyway i watched a boxing match on tv. it was on cinemax, replaying a hbo payperview fight from two years ago. i'm wondering if cinemax feels sad about that. the fight itself was a totally one-sided thrashing by the contender against the champion. couldn't touch him at all. he had him in the corner and the little black guy weaved and dodged through like seven swings. felt sad for the guy. it lasted an hour, and it was pretty exciting considering i can usually barely stand watching sports. it's always funny for me because they look like they're tapping each other lightly, then the bell rings and the cameras go to the corners and i see the faces close up.

4.47am spent the last two days doing some slow learning on how to capture paper textures for use as color overlays in corel. found a site with amazing hi-res stuff. the marble textures make my cry with joy. seriously. that shit's so fucking beautiful.
damn you popcap
Sunday, May 24, 2009
4.05pm just spent four hours killing zombies. not with my trusty M1014, but with fucking plants. shouldn't have doubted popcap's ability to make stupid games that are somehow addictive.

11.44pm braid was short but lots of fun. awesome final stage. worth the US$15 he's asking for? considering i finished it in day, that's might demanding. and trying to piece together the overly metaphorical story is too much like figuring out a lit essay.
plants vs zombies is tower defense with five lanes and all the guns shoot one way. i guess they want to make gameplay straightforward and simple? not biting. one more chance and i'm dropping it.
the path is annoyingly artsy. spooky at first, but eventually i got so lost (which seems intentional by the designers, no map and huge, 4d-repeating forest, genius!) that the obvious course would be to head online and find some help. no faq written yet, but from forums it's now obvious that to meet the wolf and die requires a lot of exploration (ie blind wandering and chance). i'm starting to get annoyed. also, these people made a 10-minute game called the graveyard, where you guide an old woman through a graveyard. if you pay 5 bucks to activate the demo to the full version, the only difference is that the old woman... might die halfway through. oh yeah. DEEP. ugh.
steam is cool
3.07pm title pun! but steam is really pretty neat. been trying out demos of various games. and then torrenting the good ones. outstanding. braid reminds me of the hour i spent playing prince of persia before i got bored of dying to spikes and buzzsaws. the puzzles are tough, but extremely rewarding to solve because there's no hair-trigger platform jumping required that usually boils down to lucky timing. i spoiled the ending for myself thanks to that wikipedia article but it's okay.
the path is some sort of horror game, so i have no idea why i'm trying it out. there's no demo on steam but the trailer was interesting.
plants vs zombies is rated highly. but it's a tower defense game and i haven't found one of those yet that i didn't get bored with after two levels, subsequently quitting or finding cheats.
filling up the hours
2.52am eh, what? sims 3 got leaked a few days ago. ....right, i care.
i'm contemplating getting a new game, either tf2 or gta4. l4d is running dry. i've managed to draw a parallel between my l4d experience and my wow experience. in wow, i never raided and joined endless pugs, sticking to pve dungeons while avoiding pvp unless i got super bored. l4d is almost exactly like that; i was hooked by the pve, where i first played with friends, then when i bought the game i joined random pug groups and hoped my teammates weren't crap. now i strictly play versus, which is pvp.
another thing i've found is that i now again enjoy playing the survivors more than infected. it's impossible to play infected nowadays when you have bad teammates. less so with survivors, it's often the case i can let my teammates fight to kill everything on the grond as if the killcount matters, while i keep an eye in the air and they'll all freak out when a boomer explodes while jumping halfway down a building. and furthermore what made infected play fun, i.e., griefing others, is now highly applicable to survivor play, because infected tactics are getting more and more obvious. after awhile it becomes simple to just reverse your thinking and think "what would i do / where would i be if i were playing infected?" and be pointing at hunters and smokers just as they peek around corners and headshot them. or spraying a wall with shot and blow up a boomer who spawned early and stood there gurgling. it's amusing to be accused of hacking by noobs when all you need to do is listen to screams and coughs and burbles. i guess CS players experienced this years ago.
funny game today, the entire inftected team were noobs, but my three teammates were noobs too, which is surprising because nowadays only the decent players are still playing. i only played one or two stages with them, it was a huge pain until they were all red and yellow health and they were finally moving together because they were too slow to run ahead and try to be heroes. meanwhile i was green health and pulling them around the safest routes by keeping in front, and griefing all the infected noobs who must have been getting frantic at the sight of all those red outlines, popping out one at a time for facefulls of shotgun shells. i was feeling pretty good about myself, and the infected must have realised something because one of them said in general chat 'GET THAT HOOI' and my head swelled up so big i couldn't see straight. hilarity ensued as all attacks moved to me and i got pounced by solo hunters and smokers ran in front of me to grab me, i recall once he was so close i managed to shove him while being dragged.
but that's against noobs. most often it's either stalmate vs stalmate or both teams keep dying because of one weak link who thinks he's invincible and eventually leaves us with a 3 man team which gets picked slowly to bits.
so a new game. to fill the hours. tf2 looks like it'd be really fun and any sort of class system always gets my blood pumping. sadly it's probably only full of pros so jumping in would mean ages of noob failure against them and angry teammates.
i also need to get my hands on the new ender book and the new pratchett book. the synopsis alone makes my eyes tear up. sounds awesome.

12.52pm
i swear they keep getting better and better. except sandvich, that was dissappointing. and it's about time, too, the game's a year and a half old and the last video was like four months ago. it's good to know that if valve ever fails at videogames they can move on to be pixar for adolescent guys.
i guess that's cool

9.27pm it's a boat that floats and a ship that flips http://sio.ucsd.edu/voyager/flip/flip2.html
saw it on the discovery channel. it's a ship with a humongous baseball bat for a tail (aft? stern?) that sinks itself till it's pointing vertically in the air. the funniest bit was when they showed interior shots of the crew adjusting all the toilets and bunk beds and other equipment 90 degrees.
after that there was a documentary on natgeo about the loch ness monster and its canadian cousin ogopogo. what a name.
whaaaat
5.37am new azumanga pages in celebration of the 10th anniversary. sweet.

3.36am it's like all the good anime came out at once
there's sengoku basara, apparently based on a dynasty warriors type video game set in japan. i had high hopes that it'd be fun to watch because episode 1 had crazy attack move shouting and outfit-colour-coordinated energy attacks. however, it seems they're quickly blowing the budget because fight scenes are getting sparcer and sparcer. and the story is amazingly historical. like, political maneuvering and troop movements and shit. done by crazy characters in kooky costumes. doesn't mix well.
k-on is this season's lucky star, plus guitars. kyoani knows how to do what it does well and this is more of the same stuff they've been making.
haruhi-chan is no season 2 but it's all there is. so sad. so dissappointed.
fma2 is looking good. bones is really tossing out the money this time round. it seems they've chosen to start all the way from the beginning, and not from the point where series 1 diverged from the manga. oh well. minus points, but not too bad.
basquash is MECHA playing BASKETBALL while wearing giant nike shoes. another big budget, chock full of cgi show. it's also really obvious they're going for style because it's a very nice looking show. unique character designs and well done backgrounds. i'm doubting the ability of this premise to hold out for long, though.
lastly there's Eden of the East, and i'm only halfway through episode 1 but what i've watched spurred me to write this post. the story seems intriguing so far but the sinker is a collection of little things that impressed me: it opens in america, they've got a well drawn washington monument and white house, cars have left-side driver's seats, they reference the movie Taxi Driver and above all, all the american bystanders speak proper english. finally, finafuckingly there's a studio meticulous enough to do some homework, and gone the extra mile to hire proper english speaking poeple, and not just pick some random westerners off the streets to do voices, though some studios don't bother doing even that. there's a heavy black female cop and she sounds like FAT BLACK WOMAN it seriously blows my mind. the opening is by this guy called Noel Gallagher, who i had to wiki to find out is the lead guitarist of Oasis.
gurren lagaan movie 1 came out, it was awesome. didn't live up to the series though, but that's a humongously tall order, i didn't expect it to. movie 2 is screening in japanese cinemas but for some reason they don't make camrips over there. so... right now i'm thinking either i wait another half a year for the dvd to come out, like i did for movie 1, or i concuss myself into a coma so i don't have to endure the wait, or i rewatch the entire tv series once a week to sate my hunger.
well, there's one more option. apparently there's some german anime festival where they're showing the gurren lagaan movie 2, eva movie 2, and the eureka 7 movie, all with english subs. so i can run to germany right now, or hope the germans do a cam job. but chances are low, because you know the germans only make good stuff. why does germany get all this good shit? is it cuz they were allies with japan in ww2?
i spend 20 minutes setting up Chiropractic and you won't let me enter it what the fuck man this is almost as annoying as the time i tried to make clitoris
why won't you register it as a word? prude.
oh boy oh boy oh boy

2.35am there's this pokemon show in japan, no, not the anime, they have a weekly show with real people about pokemon yeah crazy but whatever
last ep they ended by saying "next week we've got a big announcement!" and they had two of those filled-with-confetti-pop-open-surprise balls hanging from the ceiling, and one was SILVER and the other was GOLD
right now i've got my HOPES just like my PENIS UP
bad, tasteless joke. been watching too much family guy. horrible show.
but anyway. remakes of the GSC generation would be awesome. i'll never forget completing 8 gyms and thrashing the elite four and suddenly oh wow here's boat ticket it's back to the red/blue map and eight more fucking gyms and all the old places again! and go fight PKMN TRNR RED on top of mt. silver with his lvl 81 pikachu and all the first gen starters.
so, um, yeah. this blog. kinda stagnating. my life is eat draw l4d sleep wake over and and over. two months ago that would have been eat draw wow sleep wake but that's behind me. i can't wait for eat draw d3 sleep wake but that's way in the future. i'd like to say that i'm suffering from extreme apathy and i've lost my will to live because my life is a hollow shell, but no. i'm having the time of my life. zero pressure, zero stress. i'm a disgusting bum.
i'm pretty sad that chances are extremely low that d3 will have an assassin/rogue class on launch. there's five classes total, and blizzard said the only returning class is the barbarian. so with one melee and two spellcasting classes already announced, i'm assuming one more physical ranged, some sort of not-amazon like the wizard is totally a not-sorcerer. so the last char will probably be melee, but my hopes were dashed when i read this BLUE POST ZOMG. specifically, "Any potential expansions are probably where you'd try out something not of a core archetype like, say, an assassin or druid." bummer. probably a not-paladin.
